I been to places in the Adirondacks where I would be willing to bet that maybe 25% would be able to find their house. : )

I've wondered for some time how much of our educational malaise comes from the fact that politicians realize a really stupid public is easily led (or misled).

It would be interesting to see how a national survey would turn out. 75% knowing what "continent" they are on might be pushing it.

I'm betting any state, Americans tend to not have much of a world view outside of their borders, tho not being able to find your home country is pretty pathetic by any standard. I wonder how many could find Iraq on a map if they had to.

Not sure that our illustrious CIC could find Iraq on a world map. :-)

Maybe if you have NASCAR, chewing tobacco, and some good hootch to drink, you really don't care where any place else is in the world (or in this case, our continent or country). If you know where Talladega and Darlington are, you're set.:-)

I'm sure one at least one of the patrons at California Motor Speedway would be offended by your remark.

Nascar fans can find at least twenty five or more tracks on the map in three countries now, can major league baseball fans match that? Don't mess around with Nascar fans, they come from all walks and parts and are the most intense and loyal, ask how many #8 fans are doubling up this fall.

                  I'm not surprised

I saw an interview with a reporter in San Francisco last week

They went into a local high school and asked a series of US history questions to juniors.

The questions were answered correctly 25% of the time:

                  First US president

Who was president during most of WWII

Which countries did the US fight against during WWII

                  When was the Civil War

                  Etc

                  I was absolutely amazed.

Do they still teach history and geography or are those subjects passe?

I am from Georgia...what can I say. Notice this survey was taken in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Cross the street over to Target and the results probably be different. Just funning all you Walmart shoppers :)

This has been going on for years now. They do not teach kids anything anymore. I don't really know what they do in school these. People in this country are only interested in making a fast buck and hell with tomorrow. We are going down the tubes real fast.

You blame the schools but what about the parents, I taught my kids where everything is in the world and what historical references places have. Parents are not helpless to teach their own children, how will they ever respect you if you can't show them wisdom?

This is a planned attack on american democracy. Good education is essential to democracy and you have to pay for it. The totalitarian (corporatist) elements in our society much prefer that only the offspring of the wealthy have a good education and that all others be susceptible to simplistic propaganda - especially about our imperialistc wars in the rest of the world.

It's no wonder this country is falling apart. All the NEA is interested in teaching is politically correct crap. In other words, revised historical propaganda. But then that's what happens when Communist pigs are running the school system. The scum running the school systems in this country make Nazis look like angels.

You would do well to have communist pigs running the education system, it would be a step forward.

Maybe with Bush's No Child Left Behind people didnt read the fine print (in underachievement). The last thing the Neo's want is an educated populace. Look at how many STILL believe Saddam was behind 9/11.

Big deal the survey was done in a shopping mall - any shopper can tell you exactly where any mall within a hundred miles is - You want them to worry about where their country is located too?

I was fortunate to have some of the best teachers you can find! They knew their subjects and they also knew HOW TO MOTIVATE KIDS IN THE CLASSROOM! I bet you every child will measure up to the task when s/he is challenged in a positive way. That's what my teachers did!

There is no such thing as a dumb child! But I would not doubt that there are dumb politicians, dumb administrators AND DUMB PARENTS all around!

Think Kansas City Board of Education and the theory of Evolution V Intelligent Design!

                            God Bless America!

What I think is funny is that most of the blacks in the video got it right and the white "lady" got it wrong at least 4 times. I would have laughed my ass off if'n it wearn't so sad.
